Shubhashis Roy Dipta will join Amazon Science as an Applied Research Scientist Intern in Summer 2025. Shubhashis is currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) under the supervision of Dr. Frank Ferraro. His cutting-edge research bridges Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Computer Vision (CV), reflecting his passion for solving interdisciplinary challenges.

During his PhD, Shubhashis has already made impactful contributions through research internships, including his time at Scale AI. This upcoming role at Amazon marks another exciting chapter in his journey.

Before starting his PhD, Shubhashis worked in the software industry for over three years. He was also the founder of UniShopr (2018–2022), a cross-border e-commerce platform catering to his home country, Bangladesh. Additionally, during his undergraduate studies, he excelled in competitive programming, showcasing his problem-solving skills in numerous contests.

Shubhashis discovered the opportunity on LinkedIn and applied through a referral. The recruitment process included the following stages:

Phase 0: Online Assessment

This initial phase featured two easy LeetCode problems, which were straightforward and served as a preliminary screening.

Phase 1: Machine Learning Basics

After 1.5 months, the recruiter invited Shubhashis to the next phase. This round focused on foundational machine learning concepts, such as overfitting, underfitting, transformers, attention mechanisms, and large language models (LLMs). Additionally, there were leadership questions, a critical component of Amazon’s recruitment process.

Phase 2: Machine Learning and Problem-Solving

Conducted just seven days after Phase 1, this round had a similar focus on machine learning basics and included one easy LeetCode problem.

Manager 1-on-1 Session

Approximately one week after Phase 2, a manager reached out to Shubhashis for an informal 1-on-1 discussion. Impressed by his profile and interview performance, the manager shared insights about the team and the nature of their work.

The Offer

Shubhashis received a verbal offer two weeks after Phase 1 and the written offer 2.5 weeks after Phase 2.

Special thanks to Shubhashis Roy Dipta for taking out the time to share his recruitment experience with me. If you have any queries, feel free to contact him at iamdipta@gmail.com
