Career Advice Tips for University Students

I have received several queries in the past from my readers, who are pursuing their undergraduate studies, about career advice. So in this article, I am going to share some career advice tips in no particular order.

  • Choose your career path while you are pursuing your undergraduate studies. This will enable you to make preparations for your resume and your job interview early on.

  • Begin your job hunting process way before you graduate. This will help you to understand the job market and to make informed decisions.

  • Start drafting your resume toward the end of your second year of university. This will help you to identify the areas you need to work on and you will have adequate time to work on those areas.

  • Do adequate research about a company’s culture and interview process before applying. There are sites like Glassdoor and my blog to give you such information.

  • If your university does not offer internship opportunities then look for remote internship opportunities. Here’s one curated list.

  • Do not be picky while choosing the companies to apply for a job. If you get the opportunity to interview for a lower-tier company, you should grab it. This experience will provide you feedback on your preparations, which in turn will help you to work on your weaknesses.

  • Usually, a Master’s degree is irrelevant to getting a tech job. So try to get a job after you are done with your undergraduate studies.

  • Do not prolong your undergraduate studies unless you have a very strong reason to do so.

  • Do not accept job offers in a rush. Take your time to inspect the offer.

  • Everything in life is a domino effect. So, spend your undergraduate life wisely.
