Oftentimes, I’ve received questions from my readers regarding the topics - jobs, university, and miscellaneous. In most cases, I could not answer their queries because of a lack of time. So, I’m using this form as a medium to collect such questions. I’ve received some questions, and for this article, I’ve picked 2 of the questions to answer.

Question #1

Is there any way to identify which arena of CSE suits me the most? Is there any parameter to measure the interest?

This is a good question. What I feel is you have to explore and invest some time in a particular field to determine whether you are interested in that field. There is probably no shortcut to it. Having said that, what you can do now is to decide on your goals after you graduate, for example - do you want to stay in academia? or do you want to work in the software industry? Suppose, you want to stay in academia then you will probably end up being a Lecturer or go for higher studies abroad. You can then prepare for these endeavors in advance. On the other hand, if you choose to work in the software industry, research a bit on the kind of roles available in the software industry. A good approach is to check various job posts. You will get plenty of resources on the internet to prepare for the roles you are comfortable with. While making preparations, you will eventually understand whether you are interested in this role or not.

I want to know, I am in my final year but my industry attachment skill is not up to the mark, here on how could I overcome in a recommendable time lapse as a software engineer.

This is a good question. What you can do is take part in various open-source programs. You can start with an unpaid opportunity such as GirlScript Summer of Code and gain relevant experience. Usually, unpaid opportunities are easy to get in. Then, try for a paid opportunity. Several blog posts on the internet explain how availing these opportunities have helped students prepare for software engineer roles so, I will not go into detail.
